chicago-sunset-crop.pngThe Still City - Chicago © Jason Denning

Starting on August 21st, IDSA's 2013 International Conference kicks off and you are officially invited to Break The Rules! You only have one more week to take advantage of their early registration prices and save anywhere from $50 to over $100 to attend this system-shaking event.

We at Core77 have been working with IDSA for many years and are always proud to support their efforts and sponsor great events like this one. This year's Annual International Conference, including one day of exciting Unconference action, is coming to one of our favorite cities - Chicago; home of the largest collection of Impressionist paintings outside the Louvre in Paris, and the original Mr. Beef! Beyond the outstanding line up of speakers and topics, we look forward to throwing our annual party, co-sponsored by Keyshot and Formity this year.

To add to all the excitement, we're sponsoring the IDSA Portfolio Review again, except this year, we're adding a twist to it that we can't reveal just yet, but will definitely get you excited to participate. (Stay tuned for more details on that.)

Now that you know more about the 2013 International Conference, register right now to take advantage of the early bird prices and big savings on everything this event has to offer.

Design Entrepreneurs: Brett Lovelady

DesignEntrepreneurs-BrettLovelady-1.jpgAstro Studios worked with Nike on the design of the Nike+ Fuelband.

This is the second profile in our series on American design entrepreneurs, looking at how they got where they are, what they do all day, and what advice they have for other designers running their own businesses. Read last week's profile here.

Brett Lovelady has discovered the sweet spot. The company that he founded in 1994, Astro Studios, is now a 28-person consultancy based in San Francisco and known for groundbreaking product design and branding for major clients like Nike and HP. Six blocks away is the headquarters of Astro Gaming, a spin-off business he co-founded in 2006 to design and produce premium gaming products. Skullcandy acquired the business in 2011 and now Lovelady splits his time between helming his original firm and serving as a creative head for Astro Gaming.

But while Lovelady may be balancing two companies with nearly 60 employees between them, he still acts like a creative upstart at a small firm. "At Astro we consider ourselves to be small, even though we are more of a mid-sized firm now," he says. "We're fearless, we'll jump into any project and apply design principles, and we'll have fun. We are nimble enough to work with entrepreneurs starting a business, but we can also rally a team for a major brand roll-out. That has led to big opportunities." Like designing the Xbox 360, or the iPAQ for Compaq.

Parsons The New School for Design x Poltrona Frau - Designing for Wastelessness, Part 4: The Final Projects & Winners

ParsonsxPoltronaFrau-JennyHsu-Piqnique-1.jpgPhotos by Jessica Miller

For many of the practicing designers who live and work in the five boroughs, the months before the ICFF are often a caffeine-fueled blur, crunchtime in anticipation of the single most important weekend of the year. The 15 third-year Product Design students in the Design for Wastelessness studio at Parsons the New School for Design had the chance to experience the same flurry of activity as Poltrona Frau offered them the chance to exhibit their projects during NY Design Week. The brief: to transform leather off-cuts into retail-worthy goods for the home and office.

Led by instructor Andrea Ruggiero, this marks the third year in a row that the storied Italian manufacturer has sponsored coursework at Parsons, in which the students had seven weeks to design and prototype their products. About a month ago, they presented their projects to the panel of judges from both Poltrona Frau and the school, including guest judge Massimo Vignelli, who subsequently announced three winners at the company's Design Week reception. Congrats to Jenny Hsu, Yuna Kim and Benjamin Billick, who won a trip to the Poltrona Frau factory in Tolentino, Italy, where they will have the opportunity to refine their prototypes with master craftsmen.

ParsonsxPoltronaFrau-JennyHsu-Piqnique-2.jpgJenny Hsu - "Piqnique"

First Place: Jenny Hsu
Piqnique is an extension of the domestic dining experience for on-the-go situations, enriching your eating rituals while away from home. Whether at the park, a horse-race, or on the yacht, Piqnique functions as a carrier for a set of silverware and a napkin. When unrolled, Piqnique also doubles as an elegant placemat: it's Frau to Go.

ParsonsxPoltronaFrau-YunaKim-Miovino.jpgYuna Kim - "Miovino"

Second Place: Yuna Kim
Miovino is a set of wine markers designed for social gatherings that elevates the act of enjoying wine through a luxurious tactile experience. By choosing a coloured leather wine marker—or sleeve—wine drinkers can identify and personalize their stemware, and as a result, Miovino also becomes the interface between the drinker and the glass, suggesting that the glass should be held by the stem. Miovino exemplifies the concept of wastelessness, as the markers are made with small and economically-shaped production scraps coupled with small embedded magnets.

Bye-Bye, Steel Rectangle: Apple Goes Form-Follows-Function with New "Thermal Core" Mac Pro Redesign

0

new-mac-pro-01.jpg

Yesterday Apple unveiled their ridiculously sexy update to the Mac Pro line. The sleek, 9.9-inch-tall, 6.6-inch-diameter cylinder is unlike any other desktop machine you've seen.

new-mac-pro-02.jpg

At first blush you might assume they're simply playing with basic geometry, as they did with their famously failed Cube design; but the cylindrical shape was not arbitrarily selected, and is pure form-follows-function. The design process began with re-thinking the internal architecture and deciding that each core--the machine can be kitted out with up to twelve--ought receive equal cooling to improve performance. Says Apple of the resultant "thermal core" design:

Rather than using multiple heat sinks and fans to cool the processor and graphics cards, we built everything around a single piece of extruded aluminum designed to maximize airflow as well as thermal capacity. It works by conducting heat away from the CPU and GPUs and distributing that heat uniformly across the core. That way, if one processor isn't working as hard as the others, the extra thermal capacity can be shared efficiently among them.

Paul Loebach on Improving Society, Trying Not to Procrastinate, and the Importance of Patience in Design

0

PaulLoebach-Core77Questionnaire-1.jpgLoebach and some "failed experiments" in his Brooklyn studio

This is the second installment of our Core77 Questionnaire. We'll be posting a new interview every other Tuesday.

Name: Paul Loebach

Occupation: I'm a furniture and product designer.

Location: Brooklyn

Current projects: I'm just finishing up a watering can design I did for an American brand called Kontextür, and I'm working on some new lighting with the American company Roll & Hill. And there are always a couple confidential new projects in the works.

Mission: My philosophy as a designer is to improve the lives of society as a whole by bringing value and meaning to the objects that inhabit our material world.

PaulLoebach-Core77Questionnaire-2.jpgThe X3 Watering Can's handle and pour spout are a single metal tube, bent three times.

When did you decide that you wanted to be a designer? When I was really young. I remember playing with my toys and thinking about ways that they could be improved and wanting to redesign them. Eventually that evolved into my awareness of the field of industrial design.

Education: I went to Rhode Island School of Design, studying industrial design. Graduated in 2002.

First design job: Right after I graduated, I moved to New York City to do an apprenticeship for a furniture designer named John Davies. Basically I did full-scale drawings of wood furniture under his guidance. I did that for a year, at which point I branched off and started my own design business.

Who is your design hero? I don't know if I have any one particular hero. Anytime I open up a design book or magazine, I just have respect for all those people that have made their mark in that way, because I know how much effort, thoughtfulness, patience, and stamina it takes to get there. So the people that are out there doing it and making it happen in general are my design heroes.

Tired of that same old overly smart, overly coy, overly dramatic conference talk you keep sitting through? Yeah, you know the one. Where some yahoo is up there "connecting the dots" on a bunch of shit that is more or less obvious, or, is painfully parsed together? We get it. But it doesn't mean it's fun. So give the DDC a shot? Welcome to our little brand of dumb! Let this talk be a breath of fresh air. Get dirty with the DDC and talk about things that don't really have much to do with things. Dumb things. Orange things. Wild things. Things that might save yer life. Things that might make you throw out the old things? And maybe not? That just might be the thing...

iOS 7 Preview Leaves No Doubt: Whether Hardware or Software, Ive's Got the Juice

0
0

ios-7-01.jpg

In addition to unveiling their redesigned Mac Pro, yesterday Apple also previewed their forthcoming iOS 7. This is the one many an industrial designer has been waiting to see; we all know Jonathan Ive can do hardware, but iOS 7 will be the first real indication of what software will look like under Ive rule—and if he'd be given free reign. Former Apple executive Scott Forstall was famously a proponent of skeuomorphism, the inclusion of real-world elements—stitched leather, lined legal pads, spiral bindings—that many in the design community found tacky and backwards-looking. Following his ouster, Ive was placed in charge of iOS design, and he's made it no secret that he intended to Think Different.

Well, based on what we're seeing, we're happy to report that it seems Ive's creative control is complete.

The first thing users will likely note is the change in typography. Just as Forstall's beloved word "skeuomorphism" has an unusual sequence of three vowels in a row, Ive has switched the font to what looks to be Helvetica Neue Ultra Light, which has an equally foreign sequence of contiguous vowels. The resultant look is undoubtedly more modern (though your correspondent prefers thicker fonts for legibility's sake).

ios-7-02.jpg

ios-7-03.jpg

"Flatness" is the adjective of the day, and the new iOS has it in spades. In the past decade-and-a-half icons have spun steadily out of control; what were once simple representations of objects, necessarily drawn in low-res due to computing constraints, unpleasantly evolved into overcomplicated, miniaturized portraits. Ive's flat design approach returns to the roots of the graphic icon, eschewing 3D shading and instead using line to tell the tale. With the exception of a couple of icons—the Settings gears and Game Center's balloons—shading is completely absent. The cartoonish highlights on the text message word bubbles are gone. Background gradations are the only non-flat visual variation allowed.

ios-7-04.jpg

Interestingly enough, the keypad now looks like something graphically designed by the Braun of yore...

From Designing for Manufacture to Designing with Manufacturers, by Jamie Wolfond

0
0

JamieWolfond-COMP.jpg

We've been fans of Jamie Wolfond's work since he turned up on our radar at RISD Furniture Design's "Transformations" exhibition in Milan last year. The Toronto native and recent grad has dabbled in a number of delightfully weird experiments in furniture design since then, from the previously-seen stools and chairs to the lighting and timepieces pictured below.

With his BFA under his belt, the young designer has secured an internship at Bertjan Pot's Rotterdam studio for the summer; he's not yet sure where he'll end up afterward, but his future is looking bright. Wise beyond his years, Wolfond recently took the time to share his thoughts on the convoluted world of designing for manufacture.

I started my degree project intending to work with trades, machines and producers from outside the furniture industry to design and construct prototypes for accessible, producible furniture.

The idea for the project came out of my newfound interest in designing for production. As a young and inexperienced design student, I was immediately attracted to the increasingly popular 'licensing' model. Licensing allows a freelance designer to come up with a project, create a prototype, pitch it to a manufacturer, and hopefully sell the rights to its design, receiving a small royalty for every piece sold. This way of working is particularly attractive to students since it promises the possibility of having one's work produced on a large scale without the financial risk, distribution channels or industry experience that it would take to start a business from scratch.

Further investigation of the licensing model as a way for young designers to see their work produced revealed several problems with the idea of designing products on speculation alone.

How Logs Are Turned Into Boards: Riftsawn

0
0

wood-plainsawn-01.jpg

This is the second post of an ongoing series about wood. Understanding its nature, the way it moves and changes, and the implications for designers. Check back every Wednesday for the next installment.

When working with wood we ought to start with how it's cut into boards. Because how wood is cut can have a huge impact in how it behaves. In my first post of this series, I described one of the most common cuts, the plainsawn, it's advantages and disadvantages. Now we'll look at riftsawn.

riftsawn_01.jpg

As you can see in the diagram above, plainsawn cuts are made parallel to each other and this results in a board face with oval curves also known as a "cathedral" look. But with riftsawn wood the cuts are made perpendicular to the tree's growth rings which creates a straight grain pattern that is much more uniform. (We'll talk about quartersawn, the third type of cut in next week's post.) The result is a board face that is more refined and might be suitable for cabinets or floors, or in any situation where the designer wants a uniform pattern. For instance, riftsawn is good for table legs because all four sides of the leg will look the same. Specifically riftsawn is also useful in pieces where there is something you want to highlight, instead of detract attention from. Because riftsawn tends to be good as a basic aesthetic:
