It's Small-Time: Wooden Bottle Opener

gg-entries-bottleopener.png

Sure, anyone can hammer a bent nail into a chunk of wood and pry open bottles with it. But the reason this Wooden Bottle Opener is available at the MOMA store is because it takes an artist like Brendan Ravenhill to not only make sure the handle's made from beautiful walnut wood, but also add magnets to catch the cap AND attach it to your refrigerator! Now that's design.

Medical design getting sexier, doctors have some bad-ass workstations

$

While doing research on workstations for a DIY project, I've developed a bit of a medical device fetish. It started when I saw BK Medical's Red Dot Design Award winning Flex Focus 700 ultrasound system, which is basically just a touchscreen on wheels:

0meddes001.jpg

That's no iPad by the way, it's a 19-inch tablet displaying "sharp laparoscopic, intraoperative, and percutaneous images, with detail that is visible from virtually any angle." It's height-adjustable, meant to serve Docs both tall and small, and for those who don't want the rollie it also comes in countertop and wall-mounted versions.

0meddes002.jpg

Philips' iU22 xMATRIX ultrasound system eschews the minimalism of the Flex Focus and has a chunkier, droid-like form...

0meddes003.jpg

...as do GE's Vivid and Logiq E9 ultrasound systems:

0meddes004.jpg

All of those look cool, but if I had all the money in the world and could design my own workstation however I liked, I'd emulate the bad-assed ceiling-mounted rig of BK's Pro Focus system.

Tokyo's new, huge, and very smart vending machines

$

0smvemcj.jpg

It wouldn't look out of place in the background of Blade Runner: A selection of train station platforms in Tokyo now feature gargantuan vending machines with 47-inch touchscreen panels. The machine, by Roppongi-based Design Studio S, is more than just a gimmicky touchscreen and practically bristles with design intelligence.

First off, the "smart" machine only shows images of drinks it actually has in stock, to avoid any aesthetically-offensive "SOLD OUT" badges. (Ah, Japan.) Secondly, the dispensing slot is placed in a higher position than on regular machines, so that Tokyo's population of "Office Ladies" in skirts don't have to crouch down in an unladylike way to access the product. Third, you can buy drinks by pointing your cell phone at the machine, though this perhaps has more to do with Japan's intelligent embrace of technology rather than the design of the machine.

But where the real brilliance comes in is with the onboard camera. The machine determines your gender and estimates your age and suggests demographically popular drinks. More importantly, after you purchase your drink, the machine has now collected some actionable data very important to drink suppliers (without capturing any personal information). For example:

- Primary customers are men in their 20s and 30s
- 63% men, 37% women
- Men in their 30s outnumber men in their 20s that use the vending machines
- Men in their 30s start the day with canned black coffee;
- Energy drinks purchased by men in their 30s are Lipovitan D in the morning, and Oronamin C and Red Bull in the evening to night;
- Mineral water and Pocari Sweat are bought most by men in their 30s after midnight

- It used to be thought that juices were mostly bought by women, but the Shinagawa vending machines sold way more juices than expected to men in the late evenings and at night
- JR East Water Business introduced the Aomori Ringo 100 on the 16th, with a reworked label design that appeals more to men than their initial design

Some other interesting stats are that the machines are selling three times more drinks than regular vending machines, and "there are regularly crowds (and lines) in front of the vending machines, waiting for an opportunity to interact with them."

Start a fire sans-kindling with the Adirondack FireStone

Kinda looks like a flaming marshmallow on the end of a stick, dunnit? Industrial designer Rob Englert is a co-founder of the Adirondack FireStone Company, and they make this cool, rustic-looking kit for getting fires going. Called the FireLighter, it consists of a stoneware pot, two bottles of candle/lamp oil and a handle connected to the company's namesake, the FireStone.

0adirofsc002.jpg

The FireStone's porous, so you use it to soak up some oil, then fire it up and stick it under your firewood and you're good to go. Stays lit for up to 20 minutes so you can skip the kindling step altogether.

"The product is entirely made in the USA," says Englert, "and is hands down the best way to light a fire."

The next time you generate a PDF document, ask yourself if your intended audience is required to actually print it out. The World Wildlife Fund has introduced a new self-titled PDF-based file format, which disables the document's print output. It's amazing how such a simple idea can actually help you and your coworkers save tons in costly paper use each year, which we all know translates to more than dollars and cents, but forests and trees. It's an easy way to save some serious green.

InCase's slick-and-slim iPhone 4 battery case

$

Technological progress means the lens on my iPhone 4 is superior for shooting video than the lens on my aging Canon G9. During my recent Autodesk University coverage, I was unable to get the G9 to adequately focus on some close-up shots I wanted, and the only reason I didn't shoot the entire conference with my iPhone is that I didn't want to run the battery down.

Yesterday InCase launched a killer product to give an iPhone extra juice.

0gicsbc001.jpg

You've probably seen the Mophie Juice Pack Air, a snap-on battery that chunks your iPhone out, but InCase's is super slim. Called the Snap Battery Case, rather than adding bulk on the back, like the Mophie, InCase adds virtually nothing to the front-to-back depth of the phone and instead tacks it on the bottom, under the dock connection. The left-to-right width of the case is nearly identical to the phone itself, so the overall effect is like a slightly longer iPhone. Seen in person, you can't believe how freaking thin the thing is.

0gicsbc002.jpg

Charge indicators on the back let you know how much juice is left, and road warriors and Chatty Cathies alike will dig the extra 40% of power--that's three more hours of yapping, 16 more hours of audio playback and a staggering 120 hours of extra standby. Even better, bulk is not the only area where InCase is trying to undercut the Mophie--at about 60 bucks retail, the SBC is $30 cheaper.

Core77 Exclusive: IDEO's I Miss My Pencil C60 Redux brings touch back to music

Last year we reviewed the book I Miss My Pencil, by IDEO's Design Director Martin Bone and Materials Scientist Kara Johnson. We just came across a very cool project on their attendant website, which is dedicated to creative experiments, called C60 Redux.

0c60redux002.jpg

The concept behind the C60 Redux is this: We've gone from handling vinyl, tapes and CD's to clicking on MP3's, losing tactility in the process and making a casualty of the mix tape. Is it possible to bring that back in a digital way? Bone, Johnson, and a group of IDEO designers endeavored to do so by creating a music player built with RFID readers and some Arduino Mini Pros, all housed in a record player case. See for yourself:

If you're in the Boston area this evening be sure to attend the opening reception of Creative Captial: Designed in Boston at City Hall. The exhibition shares some of the city's best and brightest recent design contributions:

Boston is a Creative Capital, a culture center for all creative pursuits: visual and performing arts, media, and, especially, design. But what exactly is design? It is where creativity and industry meet. It is a visual planning process. It shapes our world. It is everywhere. Everything around us has been designed: the buildings we live and work in, the landscapes and spaces we move through, and the things we read, watch, and use.

There are thousands of designers in the City of Boston. This exhibit showcases work from a select sampling of these many design practitioners. Some of the things you see may look familiar. Notice the public park where you eat lunch? The lobby you pass through on your way to work? The kitchen tools you use every day? Great design at your service, created in Boston.

There's still time to register online or purchase tix at the door.

What Cuba is for '50s cars, Venezuela is for '70s cars

What the freak? I just read this article in the Times about how gasoline costs less than ten cents a gallon in Venezuela, and they're all driving around in like, '70s-era Dodge Coronets and Plymouth Valiants simply because they can. This guy even referred to a '74 Lincoln Continental as "economical"--folks, that's a car that's 19 feet long and gets 10 to 12 miles per gallon. And you can literally fill it up, according to the article, for a dollar.

I'm expecting soon they'll discover there are actual dinosaurs running around in Venezuela's jungles.

Anyways do check out the original article, there's an explanation, a slideshow, and video.
